Miami, FL-        Returning for it's 6th annual edition, the Lavender
Footlights Festival, being held on Saturday and Sunday, May 31st
and June 1st at the Miami Science Museum, will showcase staged
readings of new and exciting gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender
and queer themed plays directed by South Florida's leading
theater directors and featuring a who’s who of the area’s
brightest acting talent.

Unfurling across two concentrated days, Lavender Footlights will
present short and full length plays never produced in Florida,
allowing playwrights the opportunity to have their works
presented by professional actors, receive invaluable audience
feedback and be presented to the region’s artistic directors who
are seeking new works.  Several of the plays presented in
previous years have gone on to be produced by a variety of
theaters across the country.  Last year’s festival favorite, The
Mission by Jules Tasca is receiving a full production at the New
Theatre in Coral Gables, home of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The Lavender Footlights Festival ushers in a new era under the
co-direction of Vivian Marthell and Kareem Tabsch and Artistic
Director Ryan Capiro.  Capiro, a local actor and director, has been
involved with the production of the festival for the past three
years. Founded in 2002, The Lavender Footlights Festival was the
brainchild of Ellen Wedner and Doug Wilford, Executive and
Artistic Directors of Creative Arts Enterprises, who currently act
as advisors. "We are honored to be entrusted with this community
gem, and will work to find new ways for emerging GLBT voices to
be heard" said Marthell.

Submissions are being accepted until March 24th and must be
non-musical, English language plays written for the stage. Special
consideration is given to pieces that tackle the lesser discussed
aspects of the GLBTQ community.  For more information on
submission guidelines, please visit our website at www.
lavenderfootlights.org. Plays are selected by a jury committee
spearheaded by Capiro, who added "We are always surprised and
delighted by the quality and quantity of works we receive from
around the world, which vary from short experimental pieces to
full length large cast plays"

"Since its inception, the goal of Lavender Footlights has been to
create a forum for the presentation and cultivation of queer
themed works for the stage. We look forward to building upon the
fantastic groundwork that Ellen and Doug have laid out across
these past five years." commented Tabsch.

The 6th Annual Lavender Footlights Festival is being held on

Miami, FL            The Lavender Footlights Festival, currently in it's 6th
year and taking place on May 31st and June 1st at the Miami Science
Museum has recently announced the creation of the OVATION Award,
a recognition for those whose work has contributed to the
development of queer theatre arts.  It's with great pleasure that we
announce the presentation of this inaugural honor to Douglas Carter
Beane, whose body of work has celebrated LGBT stories and brought
joy and humor to audiences around the world.

A native of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, Douglas Carter Beane left his
rural hometown at the age of 21 for New York City to launch a career
in the arts. His first play "Advice from A Caterpillar" became a hit in
1991 and quickly secured his place as a major new talent and Beane
has yet to disappoint.  His growing body of work includes "As Bees In
Honey Drown" (Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award), "Music
From A Sparkling Planet", "The Country Club", and "The Little Dog
Laughed" (Tony Nomination, winner GLAAD Media Award).  He
recently wrote the book to the stage musical adaptation of Xanadu,
which has become a current Broadway hit.  For the screen he wrote,
"To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar"(which stayed in
the #1 box office spot for a month when it was released) produced by
Steven Spielberg and the adaptation of "Advice from a Caterpillar"
which won the Aspen Comedy Festival's Best Feature award.   As
Artistic Director of the New York theater company, Drama Dept. he
has produced the works of fellow playwrights like Paul Rudnick, David
Sedaries, and Wendy Wasserstein among others. Showing no signs
of slowing down, Beane has a full slate of new projects on the
horizons.

The Lavender Footlights Festival will unfurl across two days at the
Miami Science Museum and feature the work of budding playwrights.
Commencing at 6pm on Saturday, May 31st with the reading of the
full-length play "The Lost Art of Conversation" by playwright Ted Sod
and followed by a cocktail reception the first night of the festival will
end with the ever-popular program of short plays, aptly titled "Briefs",
featuring 8 short pieces from U.S playwrights.

On Sunday, June 1st at 6pm South Florida's leading theater critic
Christine Dolen, of the Miami Herald,  will lead a "Conversation with
Douglas Carter Beane".  The discussion will navigate through
Beane's body of work, and feature live excerpts from select plays in
Beane's canon.  The program will culminate with the presentation of
the OVATION Award to Beane followed by a reception with the artist in
attendance. The two-day Lavender Footlights Festival will come to a
close with a reading of the first act of Beane's newest play, The
Nance, featuring local actors and directed by Lavender Footlights'
Artistic Director Ryan Capiro.
